Youth To Explore Tech & Create Mobile Apps in Anacostia
Washington, D.C. – July 10, 2012 – This weekend, 20 high school students from the Washington D.C. metro area will participate in the inaugural TechXploration Youth Appathon in Anacostia.
Hosted by collaborators, DiversiTech and Cause-Driven, the TechXploration Youth Appathon in Anacostia places high school students alongside tech entrepreneurs to explore mobile app concepts and create exciting new products and tools using a mobile platform software called Appcelerator®.
“One of the goals of DiversiTech has always been to create technology outreach programs for youth in Anacostia and other underserved areas,” said Christine Johnson, Founder of DiversiTech. “We want to expose the community and its young people to the realm of possibilities in technology as well as introduce them to tech programs that already exist in the area.”
A mutual desire to build community and provide a strong support system for underserved youth is what led to the partnership between DiversiTech and Cause-Driven. The TechXploration Youth Appathon was created under that model.
“With TechXploration, our focus is on mentorship,” said Ora Wiseman, Founder of Cause-Driven. “We are aiming to foster long-term relationships between students and tech professionals that will provide ongoing support and help to expand career opportunities for students well after the appathon.”
TechXploration students will be partnered with a volunteer tech mentor to collaborate on concept development, design execution and pitch presentation which takes place on Demo Day. Demo Day gives students an opportunity to present a summary of their experience and pitch their mobile app concepts to the local tech community.
The community is invited to support the teens at Demo Day on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. at Honfleur Gallery, 1251 Good Hope Rd., SE in Washington, D.C. Attendance is free but RSVP is required at techxploration.evenbrite.com. For more information about the appathon, email info@iamdtech.com or call (202) 670- 2152.
